10 Types of Touch That Can Happen in Therapy by PESIinc

ethics-of-touch1
In the 13th century, the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II took 50 infants from their mothers and placed them with foster mothers. The foster mothers were instructed to feed and bathe the children, but not to touch, speak or interact with them in any other way. While his experiment was intended to discover what natural language the infants would speak, Frederick II would never find his answer because the children perished: unable to live and thrive without the clapping of hands and interaction of touch.

It should come as no surprise how crucial touch is to our development. It is the first sense that we develop in the womb, and the last sense we use before death. Knowing touch is the foundation of human experience and that it is essential for healthy growth and development, we need to pause and ask ourselves… When did touch become a bad word?

No touch rules were instituted to try to stop sexual abuse of children. These rules, while well intended, placed additional pressure on therapists, and started a new ethical battle.

  • How do you respond to a client’s spontaneous hug?
  • How do you ethically incorporate touch with play therapy?
  • Do you need a consent form to touch your client?

Today, there are many ways you can include touch in therapy sessions while maintaining your ethical standing. Here’s a list of 10 types of touch identified by Janet Courtney that can happen during therapy if deemed developmentally appropriate.

Greeting touch
Shaking hands with child or parent
Patterned playful touch
Quick, synchronized hand movements (such as pat-a-cake)
Reorienting touch
Touching a child that appears to be drifting off
Task-oriented touch
Hands touch passing a toy, paper, markers, etc.
Physical (related to an injury) touch
A child shows you a hurt finger
Excited/happy touch
When a child is sharing good news
Containment touch
When a child is in danger (like standing on a chair)
Intentional touch
Measuring a child’s height on the wall
Assistance touch
Help standing or completing a task
Attentional touch
When a child is touched to gain their attention about something

The Association for Play Therapy recently launched History Speaks, a great new resource for play therapists. The new series consists of a collection of videos of prominent child clinicians discussing the history of play therapy and APT. The first set of recordings includes Charles Schaefer, Louise Guerney, Dianne Frey, and Lessie Perry. The videos can be viewed at the link above, or on the APT YouTube channel (Assn4PlayTherapy). Play therapists will find some interesting stuff in these interviews. I’m looking forward to more.

New Product Update

Posted by Gary Yorke

In the past six months we’ve added over a 100 products spread across all of our major categories: books, games, toys, and miniatures. Rather than bore you with all the details visit our New Products page and browse at your leisure. We’ve also added a new video of our sand trays on YouTube.com and a video of our exhibit at the Association for Play Therapy conference in Atlanta. Speaking of Atlanta, our number one best seller was our custom made Play Therapy Chalkboard. In addition, to adding new products we’ve updated our homepage, many of our product pages, and our search function. We’re trying hard to be a “full service” child therapy store, so please let us know if there’s something you need but can’t find. As one conference participant said after seeing our exhibit in Atlanta, “You’re like the Walmart of play therapy.”

Michael’s Paintings

Bipolar Disorder in children is a terrible, life-altering disorder. Many of these children experience considerable difficulty talking about their lives and how Bipolar affects them. Michael has made a very nice and telling video, now on YouTube, that presents a compelling visual representation of how Bipolar Disorder affects him. The transition from his first painting to the third painting (My Bipolar), and then his fourth and fifth paintings give a nice visual illustration of the cycling and moods these children and experience.
