We had another great submission from Cristina Margolis! The Shiny Playground highlighted one special activity that helped her daughter cope with her ADHD. Role playing can help children process information and cope in different ways. Using play therapy techniques at home can also help children practice the skills they have learned in therapy and apply them to their daily lives. It has been known that low socioeconomic status can mean poor health in children and even some adults. But a new study has discovered that having a “good” parent-child relationship can be instrumental in battling poor health for these children. Likewise, the children who were capable of managing their emotional responses to stressful situations were protected from health impacts. This study is changing the way childrens’ health is viewed in social classes and how parents with little can still help their kids’ health a lot!
It can be difficult to tell is a child with autism is struggling with anxiety. Many of the symptoms of anxiety are present in children with autism and it can be challenging for a parent to differentiate between the two. “For example, a child may avoid a social situation because they are not socially motivated — a symptom of autism spectrum disorder — or because they are afraid of being socially rejected — a symptom of anxiety…” Luckily, thanks to Connor Kerns, Ph.D., we now have an assessment tool that will help separate the symptoms and identify is anxiety is present.
